Blood drive scheduled for Friday by ABE

February 2, 2012

A blood drive celebrating the spirit of giving will take place Friday (Feb. 3) on campus sponsored by the Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering.

An Indiana Blood Center bloodmobile will be open to all qualified donors from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday on the Agricultural Mall. The donation process takes about a half-hour.

The drive is in part a tribute to the near-decade of donations by Carol Sikler, ABE's coordinator of alumni relations and communications. Sikler was recognized recently for having given 143 units, the same amount needed by her late husband when he was ill with cancer. He died in 2003. Her donations made her eligible for an IBC prize drawing, and she won two tickets to the Super Bowl on Sunday in Indianapolis.

The drive also is motivated by the urgent need for donations.

Eligibility is based on numerous factors related to medical and other history, but the main factors for most adults are the need to weigh at least 110 pounds and ability to pass a brief mini-physical. Donors should eat normally before donating and should bring a picture ID.
